TAKING CARE OF YOUR JEWELLERY TO MAXIMISE ITS LONGEVITY
❊ Each piece is designed with high-quality products, but typically as most macrame artists do, we work with thread and brass beading
❊ The beads are quality but are likely to tarnish overtime if exposed to salt, sweat, lotions or constant water
Brass loves to do that little “tarnish tango” the moment it meets air, moisture, or skin oils — but you can slow it down a lot with a few habits and treatments. Here’s how to keep it shiny for longer:
1. Create a Protective Barrier
-
Clear lacquer or jewelry sealant: Apply a very thin coat of a clear, non-yellowing lacquer (like ProtectaClear or Renaissance Wax). This blocks oxygen and moisture from reacting with the brass.
-
Nail polish trick: In a pinch, a thin layer of clear nail polish on the inside (skin-facing side) can help prevent tarnish and skin
2. Store It Like a Queen/Legendddd
-
Keep brass preferably in a jewellery box, even with silica gel packs to absorb moisture.
-
Avoid leaving it out in humid areas (bathrooms are the enemy here)
3. Minimize Contact With Tarnish-Causing Culprits
-
Remove before swimming, showering, sweating, or applying lotions/perfume.
-
Handle with clean, dry hands — skin oils speed up oxidation.
4. Quick Polishes Between Wears
-
Use a soft polishing cloth (like Sunshine Cloths) to remove surface oils after wearing.
-
A tiny wipe after each use will stop the dulling layer from building up.
5. Deep Clean Occasionally
If it does lose its shine, here are some cleaning solutions/options;
- Lemon or vinegar
- Baking soda
- Soft cloth
- Warm water
- Mild dish soap
- Soft-bristle toothbrush (optional)
- Polishing cloth
-
Mix lemon juice and baking soda into a paste, rub gently, rinse, dry thoroughly.
-
Or soak in a mild vinegar + water bath for a few minutes, then dry and buff.
